Description
The author presents a passage from “The Pillow Book” (「枕草子」“Makura no Sōshi”), a collection of essays, anecdotes and poems written by Sei Shōnagon in the Heian period (794 - 1185).
The passage says: “In summer, the night - moonlit nights, of course, but also at the dark of the moon, it’s beautiful when fireflies are dancing everywhere in a mazy flight.” (「夏は夜。 月のころはさらなり。 闇もなほ、ほたるの多く飛びちがひたる。」 “Natsu wa yoru. Tsuki no koro wa saranari. Yami mo naho, hotaru no ōku tobichigahitaru.”).
It means that even when the moon is not shining up in the sky, we can find a sublime beauty in a countless of fireflies fluttering into the darkness of the night.
Takano sensei used copper glitters to illustrate the fireflies, in Japanese 「蛍」“hotaru”.
